Legal Basis

The Packaging Waste Act 32 (I) 2002, was enacted on 12 April 2002 with the main aim to prevent and decrease the negative effects on the environment from packaging as far as their volume and composition is concerned. Also the Law is expected to provide the right incentives to the industry to establish the necessary infrastructure to prevent, re-use, recycle or recover packaging.

• The first targets set by the Law, are for the country to abide to the requirements of the 94/62/EU Directive by the 31^st of December 2005. The revised requirements introduced by the Directive 2004/12/EU will become obligatory for Cyprus by the 31^st of December 2012.
