Legal basis

As of January 1, 2003, Law on Packaging and Packaging Waste Management and Law on Environment pollution Tax together with few post legal acts have come into force in Lithuania transposing to a national legal framework the EU directive 94/62/EC On packaging and packaging waste.

Above mentioned legal acts introduced producer's and importer's responsibility for a packaging waste and recycling targets for individual companies. In case of failure to fulfil obligatory recycling targets for consumer packaging a company pays an Environment pollution tax to a special program in the national budget. The companies are allowed to meet recycling targets individually or through a recovery organization established by industry.
