
General Information
The Green Dot of Latvia (Latvijas Zalais Punkts) was established in January 2000, by six companies of packaging industry. Their motivation - a will to live and work in better environment. Their objective - to introduce a system, which takes care of the packaging waste they produce. Basis for the functioning of the system - the Packaging Law, which transposed EC Packaging Directive 94/62/EC into Latvian legislation.
Green Dot of Latvia objectives:
- To establish a national organisation for packaging waste collection in conformity with the European Parliament and Council Directive 94/62/EC of 20 December 1994 on packaging and packaging waste.
- To introduce the producers voluntary responsibility principle for packaging and packaging waste management in Latvia, in order to ensure development of local economy and efficiency of environmental protection;
- To develop and understanding of society and industry about necessity of packaging waste collection and recycling, as well as, promote and popularize programs and activities of the organization in society.
