General Information

In the beginning of the nineties, Norway - like most other European countries - was facing growing volumes of waste. Packaging waste accounted for a considerable proportion. In 1991 the parliament thus issued a declaration obliging the business community to reduce the amount of packaging used and to collect recyclable packaging waste. Several "material companies" were set up during the following years. As of 2010 there are five such companies each managing separate systems for collection and recovery of the various packaging materials. Green Dot Norway was set up in 1998 to collect license fees on behalf of the material companies. In January 2000 Green Dot Norway joined ProEurope. Since 2008 Green Dot Norway has also operated the the Norwegian recycling and recovery schemes for plastic packaging, beverage cartoons and cardboard on behalf the material companies.
